What Wicca Means to Me |
|
I discovered Wicca at a time when I was trying to find a definition or perhaps merely an understanding of my spiritual being. Confused and disappointed by hypocrisy and politics of religion I felt empty and disconnected while being drawn to convictions formalized during childhood. Three and one half years of prolonged exposure to open oceans had reinforced a bond with the moon developed during many nights in the woods as a boy. Spiritual energies that I have come to recognize as Faery energy seemed to speak and guide me from within. My discovery of Wicca was quiet accidental. I was assisting my teenaged daughter research a school paper concerning the Celtic Halloween and the exploration led us to a small mystical gift shop and book store that just happened to be one of the gathering spots of the local Wiccian Community. After a half century of seeking I had found a haven in which I could seek my own connections with the Creating Force. During the past ten to fifteen years I have found my own balance and understanding . I am comfortable with my personal position on the Wheel or the Cycle of Life and in total peace with life and with death. For me, the real value of Wicca lies in the personal boundaries. Upon first view the Wiccian Rede seems simple; do as you will as long as it harms none. But once one enters into a path and discovers their responsibility for thoughts and non-actions as well as for their actions and the truly complex definition of what is and is not harm the spiritual being seeks deeper and deeper. At some point there seems to be a metamorphous of will that changes from desire to commitment. In this new formulation the Rede seems to say "As long as it is the best for the balance of the universe, follow your commitment to become the best that you can." The Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule are excellent guidelines for social contact but the Rede is far more encompassing and, as all Wiccian concepts, is more personal. I alone am responsible for my vibrations and I must answer for their influence. In this same light I am an extension of the Creating Force and therefore carry a part of that force within me, a force that I can connect with and use as strength. And while I do not have a God/dess watching over me, judging my every action, I do have a core of that energy within me willing to guide me. Wicca is my connection with the millions of separate spiritual seekers that dedicate their journeys through life to maintaining the balance of all creation, to making the universe a better place and to accepting responsibility for their vibrations within the universe. I, a Faery Witch solitary following my individual path of spiritual growth and service, enjoy the Constitutional protection beneath the umbrella of the recognized religion of Wicca. Within this sphere we can work to eliminate the discrimination of people grouped as Pagans and Heathens and assure not only a freedom of religion but also a freedom from religion.
