Living Magically: The Life and Times of a Witch in the 21st Century

Children and Spell-work Do Mix!

Occasionally someone will inquire if I keep my spell-work secret from my children, so I don't expose them to all of this stuff that I do I always laugh when they ask me that.

Does a Christian mother keep her bible and crosses secret from her children?

I am a Wiccan and so therefore, my children are being raised with Wiccan beliefs and virtues.

If they decided to become Christian when they are older, I would support them in that decision. I don't think that the label on our spiritual beliefs matter as much as the beliefs themselves.

I believe in love. For me, the Goddess is love. She is also light, clarity, honesty and truth; and for me, the basis or root of my belief system is love. I can think of no better foundation for my children to attach their spiritual beliefs to.

We perform spell-work together. I perform different spells with each of my children. My toddler and I perform love spells in the bath tub. She visualizes the pink swirls of love and invokes the mantra with me. She enjoys laying in my arms and feeling the incredible love that surrounds her during these times.

My 8 year old son likes to talk to his angels, so we perform spell-work that calls in our angels. He lies in bed and stares at the flame of his magically enhanced candle and has a conversation with his guardian angel. He especially likes to perform this spell when he is feeling sad or his life feels out of control. Spending time with his own personal angel gives him a feeling of importance and it boosts his self-esteem. It also assists him in finding answers for himself, with the assistance of his angel.

My teenager is more mature, so she can perform many different spells. She loves to perform prosperity spells because they always bring her new babysitting jobs. Serenity is another favorite of hers. Finding her center and then just allowing herself to exist in that space recharges her batteries. I must admit though, the calling in of our angels is something that we all enjoy (and it's my favorite too).

The only spells that I don't allow my children to perform are any banishing spells. I believe that the focus required to perform a banishing ritual is difficult for many of us to reach, and my children aren't ready for that yet. I have explained how powerful banishing spells are and how completely focused you need to be when doing them and they agree that they are not yet ready.

We also talk a lot about values, and discovering their own personal integrity and beliefs. I teach them that their values will change throughout their lives and that's okay, but it's always important to uphold whatever values they have, because that's the key to integrity. If they don't uphold their own values, then others won't respect or trust them.

We live our beliefs in our home. They live with a Mom who walks her talk so they see my example everyday, because isn't that what really matters while raising our children? Teaching them by our actions and examples.
