What is chelation therapy?

Chelation Therapy is an intravenous therapy using the synthetic amino acid EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetracetic Acid) which has the ability to "bond" or "hook onto" atoms of

heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, calcium and some trace metals. These metals combined with the EDTA are eliminated from the body through the kidneys into the urine. Heavy metal accumulation in the body may contribute to many health problems by triggering formation of "free radicals". These health problems may include: hardening of the arteries, circulation problems, neuro-degenerative, auto-immune diseases and others. We hope to significantly reduce or reverse free radical damage by removing these heavy metals.

Where do heavy metals come from?

Environmental pollutants such as leaded gasoline are breathed in or digested with the foods we eat. Mercury is a common industrial waste in water, or may have been absorbed from dental fillings. Cadmium can come from either first or second hand cigarette smoke.

Is Chelation Therapy an alternative to bypass surgery?

Although many patients report as good or greater benefits from chelation therapy than from bypass or periphero-vascular surgery, it must be pointed out that the options may not necessarily be mutually exclusive. Chelation often improves surgery's results and can be given if surgery fails. Chelation benefits the hundreds of miles of arteries throughout the body - not just those few inches treated with surgery.

What is involved in Chelation Therapy?

After careful assessment with detailed medical history, physical examination and laboratory investigation, EDTA Therapy is given by an intravenous infusion at a maximum frequency of every other day. The dosage and frequency are determined by the doctor based on assessment and ongoing evaluations. The average patient may receive an initial course of 30 treatments, but some may receive more depending on their condition.

Are there any side effects to Chelation Therapy?

Any treatments have potential side effects. Possible side effects may include minor irritations or burning at the puncture site, skin rash, upset stomach, headache or leg cramps. Kidney failure or death may occur if the drug is given improperly and monitoring is not adequate.

Is Chelation Therapy a "magic bullet"?

Chelation Therapy by itself cannot counteract years of free radical damage to the body. Modification of lifestyle including diet, exercise, cessation of smoking, combined with vitamin and mineral supplementation is essential to receive optimum benefits. A positive outlook on life is also a great help.
